Today is the industrial day where we presented our final year project. My project functions very well despite its limitation where it has poor signal inside the building. However, the device is still functioning well and able to detect the current location. Both of my accessor were satisfied with my project. They give a good comment and suggestion to improve the device.

This week I am focusing on my presentation poster where there will be Industrial Day to present our final year project on next week. Before I finalised to print my poster, I met my supervisor several times to listen for her comment and opinion on my poster. I worked my poster in Canva which is a website that provide easy flows to develop poster.

Content

This week I am focusing on collecting data to finalise the result. The device is activate to detect the location and send the information through mobile phone. The project is successful. When the request SMS is send to the system which is 'location', it act as instruction to activated the GPS system.Then,when the GPS managed to detect the location. the information will sending back to the mobile phone via GSM network. The information will be in coordinate form. By using this information, user can use on Google maps to track the real time location on map.

This week I am completing my hardware development. The prototype was successfully build. Then the prototype was tested to obtain the result. I am satisfied when the device managed to operates according to the instruction that had been programmed in Arduino .

This briefing is focusing on abstract writing in thesis .The lecturer provide a good guideline and tips on how to make a good abstract in order to attract readers to read and understand our thesis. Other than that, the lecturer explain on poster and tips to attract assessor during presentation. Template for poster is provided to make sure all the required information are shown.

This week I have finalized the components that will be use for the prototype of safety device. My prototype need to be small and light weight, so it is convenient for the Alzheimer's patient to carry the safety device anywhere and at any time.The components listed as below;

Since this week will be the last week to change title for FYP,  I meet with my supervisor and have consultation with her about this matter. During my FYP 1, one of the assessor  suggested me to change the title to more specific one. Thus, I suggested to change to "Development of Smart Shoes for Alzheimer's Patient". However, after took some consideration and advice from my supervisor, I stick to my own title which is "Development of Safety Device for Alzheimer Patient". This is because it is already suitable for my project and I can variety the method for the patients to carry the device if the circuit will not fit into the shoes.

My coding development is still in progress. I include TinyGPS++ library in this coding to control the GPS.

Meanwhile, by using AT command, I develop instruction to control the GSM.

This coding will be test on the hardware to see its operation. Along with that, coding development still need to be done to improve the system and get required result.

This week I am focusing on software that i will be used for my project which is safety device for Alzheimer patient. My project need me to interface both GPS and GSM in one system. Hence, I am using Arduino to develop my coding because it easier to assemble the code rather than other software such as Raspberry Pi. Through out this week, I learn to how to develop the code from internet source and some help from my friends.

This week I am focusing to read on journal and article about Alzheimer to improve my project which is development of safety device for Alzheimer patient. 

The article state that number of Alzheimer in Malaysia estimated to increase every year. Alzheimer who suffer from memory lost will wander away if lack of supervision from caregiver and they must find within 24 hours or else they likely to get injury or worst, death.

Thus, I need to develop a system that can send Alzheimer's location to the caregiver in a short period to avoid any harmful situation. This way can help the caregiver to know the exact location of Alzheimer at the current time if they goes missing. 

WEEK 17-PROJECT PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

By this week ,  Final Year Project 1 Proposal need to be submitted to supervisor for marking process.
In the meantime, I am currently doing my finding to improve my project for next semester and gather material that needed for my project.

In next semester, this blog will be update to show the progress of final year project product. This blog will show how the prototype will be develop and design  based on the finding that have been done in this semester.

WEEK 16- FINDING

This week, I am doing my finding on how to interface arduino with GSM. This is the essential step for my next semester to build the hardware. In the meantime, I am learning to build the programming for my project that use AT command.

The program has two objectives as described below:-

1) Send SMS using Arduino and GSM Module – to a specified mobile number inside the program

2) Receive SMS using Arduino and GSM Module – to the SIM card loaded in the GSM Module.

Other than that, I am currently doing my finding which power supply that suitable for my project. Currently I am suggesting cellular phone battery which is small and can fit into shoes and easy to charge. However further finding need to be done whether the power supply can hold in long period.

My assessor for FYP 1 is Mdm Azlina and Mdm Zabariah. Alhamdulillah my presentation went well. Mdm Azlina had commented on my title of project proposal which from her opinion is too general and need to be specific in next time that can show the main idea of my project which to locate Alzheimer's project. I took all the suggestion and comment as my stepping stone  to improve my project in next semester

In the meantime, I am working on  my presentation by gathering information related to my project and practicing how to delivered my idea to assessor effectively.

This briefing is focusing on workshop for presentation skills for project proposal presentation presented by Dr, Mohammed Reyasudin Basir Khan. Dr. Reya shared on how to prepare slide presentation effectively. Other than that, he shared on how to attract assessor with good presentation.

By attending this briefing, students able to prepare slide for project proposal presentation with guide provided.

WEEK 11 - PROPOSAL DRAFT SUBMISSION

This week, I am completing my project proposal to be submitted to the fyp coordinator for plagiarism check. Previously, I have sent proposal draft by chapter to my supervisor, Mdm Azliza to be checked and reviewed. Then, I make some improvement from my proposal based on Mdm Azliza's advice. After completing my proposal draft, I sent to Dr Marwangi through email and currently waiting for my plagiarism checker result.

WEEK 10 - FINDING ON COMPONENTS AND DEVICES USE

GSM Modem

A GSM modem is a device which can be used by a computer or any processor to communicate over a network. It requires a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card to operate and operates over a network range subscribed by the network operator. It can be connected to a processor through USB, serial or Bluetooth connection. A GSM modem exposes an interface that allows applications such as SMS to send and receive message. Message sending and receiving was performed directly on a mobile phone and charges by the mobile operator. To perform these tasks, a GSM modem must support an “extended AT command set” for sending/receiving SMS messages, as defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 and3GPP TS 27.005 specifications. GSM modems can be a quick and efficient way to get started with SMS, because a special subscription to an SMS service provider is not required. 

GPS Module

The Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver Module is a low-cost, fully integrated with on-board patch antenna which provides standard, raw NMEA0183 (National Marine Electronics Association) information or specific data, such as latitude, longitude, altitude, current time, date, speed, and travel direction through a serial interface. The GPS able to calculate the position and time accurately when it receives the data from each satellite. GPS systems contain three segments; GPS satellites, ground control stations and GPS receiver. GPS able to work when signal of time is first sent from GPS satellite at a given point. Then the time difference between GPS time and point of time clock when GPS receiver receives the time signal is calculated to generate the distance from receiver to the satellite. 

Microcontroller 

This system using Arduino as microcontroller to work on this safety device. It is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects. Arduino consists of both physical programmable circuit board can be referred as a microcontroller) and a software, or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that can be runs with computer to write and upload computer code to the physical board.

This briefing is focusing on workshop for Methodology and Results & Discussion Writing for FYP Report presented by Dr. Imran Mohamad Sofi.

Dr. Imran explained on how to write methodology by highlighting block diagram, flowchart and plan layout.  I able to write chapter 3 with guide provided. 

This week i am focusing on my block diagram for this project by identify the input, processor and output. This is my block diagram for this project:

The block diagram shows GPS module as the input and GSM modem as the output for this project. Arduino is uses to process the data.

WEEK 7 - OBJECTIVE, PROBLEM STATEMENT & SIGNIFICANCE

OBJECTIVE

The main purpose for this project is to develop a safety device for people who suffer from Alzheimer disease. The objectives of this project are:

• To develop a prototype of safety device for Alzheimer’s Patient by using GPS and GSM.

• To design a programming to integrate GPS and GSM system.

• To introduce safety device that is effective and benefits to the user.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Nowadays, missing cases related to Alzheimer’s patients become a growing concern across the world. By increasing population  of elderly or senior citizen in Malaysia, Alzheimer disease also growing as this disease commonly affect individual at age over 65 years. They suffer from memory loss where they tend to forget everything around them such as dates, places and even their name. They cannot adjust to a new environment and tend to wander around if left alone. Thus, the probability of them went missing without trace is high. Their family members or caregivers could have rough times to find them as they did not know their whereabouts and it is hard to track them if the patients have gone too far from their last seen location.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT 

By developing the safety device for Alzheimer’s patients, this system could be beneficial as one of the method to track the missing patients. In traditional way, people usually searching them all over the place by asking people nearby or spread the news about the missing patient. This method going to take a longer period before the patient can be found and worst situation might be happened between that time. This safety device equipped with GPS and GSM that installed in patient’s shoes will allows real-time location to be send to the caregiver, thus they can go straight up to the location. The device help in reducing time for searching process, thus unwanted situation happens to the patient could be avoided. This safety device also work to monitor the patient. Caregiver who cannot give their full attention to the patient can always monitor their movement. They can keep the location updated to know the patient’s whereabouts.

This briefing is focusing on workshop for Introduction and Literature Review Writing for FYP 1 Technical Proposal presented by Dr, Siti Marwangi Binti Mohamad Maharum. By attending this workshop, I able to write my chapter 1 and 2 with guide provided. 

This week I am focusing on my research for my background project on what is Alzheimer's an what is my purpose this project. 

From my finding, Alzheimer's is one of the common form of dementia which is a disease that can reduce mental ability of the patients. It cause problem to memory, thinking and behaviour. Most of the Alzheimer’s patients suffer memory loss, trouble to communicate and having a hard time to carry out daily activities etc. Patients who suffer from Alzheimer may forgotten their name, family and even their surroundings due to the memory loss. They often wandering and confuse when they are alone. They can go missing if no supervision from caregiver. 

I also make a study on missing cases related with Alzheimer'. There is a case reported by Sinar Harian newspaper on 28 August 2013 where elderly woman age 75 who suffers from Alzheimer went missing from her house when she went out to buy some groceries at store nearby in Rawang.  A research that i found states there were 93 cases where Alzheimer’s patients found dead in United States from 1998 to 2002 after leaving their caregiver unattended. 

Thus, the purpose for this project is to develop a safety device that can monitor their location and track them when they went missing. This device equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) that could help to give a real-time location of the patient to the caregiver. The system uses geographic position and time information from the Global Positioning Satellites. Longitude and latitude of the location are reported by SMS message. This device is installed in the patient’s shoes and this help to monitor their whereabouts and keep them in track. 

WEEK 5 - JOURNAL REVIEW II

Based on Dementia in Malaysia : Issues and challenges, this journal focus on the current issues of dementia in Malaysia and its challenging to provide better management and services for this population. Dementia is not a specific disease but actually an overall term that describes wide ranges of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease is one of the cases in dementia. The serious concern highlight in journal is total population of elderly in this country has increase steadily from 1957 to 1990 and expected continue to increase  by the year 2030. Thus, as the number of people reaching old increase, health issues also increase and the common illness related with old age is dementia.  This journal discuss on three issues: awareness and stigma related to dementia, the availability of resources and services and the credibility of health care professional in recognising the symptoms and providing supports to the patients and their caregivers.  Both awareness and stigma regarding dementia are very important so people will recognise the symptoms of this illness and treated it immediately. Both services and health care professional focus to help the dementia patient and support them by providing appropriate training to the health care providers such as nurses, physicians, geriatricians, etc to help the patients.

Based on GPS-GSM Based Tracking System, the purpose of this journal is to design and integarte a new system which integaretd with GPS-GSM to provide location information, real time tracking using SMS, track bus driver activity and instantaneous communication.  This system contain GPS and GSM modem along with ARM processor that installed in vehicle. GPS used in this sytem in order to detect the the location while GSM modem help to transmit the information. Along with that, ARM processor serve as microcontroller. The location of the vehicle can be reported through SMS message. A software package is developed to read, process, analyze and store the incoming SMS messages. By doing so, this system can help to monitor the vehicle in anywhere. A mesage will be sending first to the system, then the system process the data by reading the location and sent back to the sender the longitude and latitude of the vehicle.

Both journal help to give better understanding for my project. By reviewed this journals, I learned about issues and challenging for Alzheimer's patient and I believed my project can give a good benefit to help the patients. I also learned on GPS and GSM that can be used in my project in order to track the Alzheimer's patient.

WEEK 3 - JOURNAL REVIEW I

Both journal show how GPS can help  in monitoring Alzheimer Patients. 

Low Cost GPS Tracking for the Elderly and Alzheimer Patients focus on analyzing and compare cost between existent solutions to track Alzheimer Patients and their proposal for low cost GPS. In this journal they present a tracking system thought for Alzheimer patients, which intends to provide this functionality with minimum costs for their users (patient and/or caregiver). They provide a general overview of the system, followed by the presentation of the architecture where they detail each of the main components

Global Positioning System as Safety Monitor for Alzheimer's Patient purpose to integrate the Global Positioning System and Global System for Mobile Communication technology for real time people tracking using Google Maps. This journal explained how this system works in order to track location of the patients.

WEEK 2 - WHAT IS ALZHEIMER?

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimer's, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

The disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, he noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. Her symptoms included memory loss, language problems and unpredictable behavior.After she died, he examined her brain and find many abnormal clumps and tangled bundle of fibers.

Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging. The  greatest known risk factor is increasing age,and majority of people with Alzheimer are 56 and older. but Alzheimer is not just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,00 Americans under the age of 65 have younger onset Alzheimer disease (known as early-onset Alzheimer)

Alzheimer worsen over time. Alzheimer is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's individuals lose the ability ti carry on conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of 8 years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from 4 to 20 years,depending on age and other health condition.

Symptoms:

1. Worsened ability to take in and remember new information.
2. Impairment to reasoning, complex tasking, exercising judgement.
3. Impaired visuospatial abilities 
4. Impaired speaking, writing and reading.
5. Changes in personality and behavior.

My name is Nur Farah'Ain Binti Nazari and I am majoring in Bachelor Engineering of Technologist in Medical Electronic in Univeristi Kuala Lumpur Bristish Malaysian Institute. I am currently in semester 6 and having my first final year project this semester. Mdm Azliza Bte Mohamad Arshad is my supervisor and she will help me through this journey.

I chose ' Development of Safety Devices for Alzheimer's Patient ' as my final year project. This project will focus on how safety device can help family members or caregivers track Alzheimer patient's location.
